In episode 11 of the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, I interviewed my friend Pat Flynn from the Smart Passive Income Blog. This was 2010, relatively early in both of our podcasting journeys, and the conversation tackled a question that was on a lot of people's minds: can you really make money online without teaching other people how to make money online?
Pat's Origin Story
Pat Flynn's story is one of the most compelling in internet marketing history. He was laid off from his architecture job and turned to the internet to figure out his next move. His first successful online business had nothing to do with teaching internet marketing — it was a study guide website for people preparing for the LEED green building certification exam.
Pat created a comprehensive resource based on his own professional expertise, and it became a legitimate business. He monetized it through a combination of ebook sales, advertising, and affiliate partnerships. Only after that success did he begin documenting his methods on the Smart Passive Income Blog, which itself became a major business.
The Key Lesson: Solve Real Problems
The most important takeaway from my conversation with Pat was that successful internet businesses are built on solving real problems for real people. Pat's architecture knowledge helped aspiring LEED professionals pass their certification exam. That is a tangible, valuable outcome that people will pay for.
This principle is just as relevant in 2026 as it was in 2010. The internet marketing world can feel like an echo chamber where everyone is selling courses about how to sell courses. But the vast majority of online revenue is generated by businesses that serve specific niches with specific solutions — health, hobbies, professional skills, software tools, creative services, and thousands of other categories.
Three Things New Marketers Should Know
Pat shared three insights that I think every new internet entrepreneur should hear. First, start with what you already know. Your existing expertise, your professional background, your hobbies — these are the foundations of a legitimate online business. You do not need to invent something new. You need to package what you already know in a way that helps people.
Second, transparency builds trust. Pat became famous for publishing his monthly income reports, showing exactly how much he earned and from what sources. That level of openness was unusual in 2010 and it built enormous credibility with his audience. In 2026, audiences are even more skeptical of hype and even more responsive to authenticity.
Third, take action before you feel ready. Pat launched his study guide website before he had everything figured out. He learned as he went, improving the product based on feedback from actual customers. Waiting until everything is perfect is just a sophisticated form of procrastination.
Why This Still Matters
Pat went on to build one of the most successful brands in online business education. But his foundation was not theory — it was real results in a real niche that had nothing to do with internet marketing. If you are looking for proof that you can build a profitable online business around virtually any area of expertise, Pat Flynn's story is it.
