The dream of the internet lifestyle has been around for as long as internet marketing itself. Make money from your laptop on a beach somewhere. Work four hours a week. Travel the world while your online business generates passive income. It is an appealing vision, and it was already a popular topic back in 2008 when Tim Ferriss published “The 4-Hour Work Week.”
I remember being inspired by people like Jason and Melanie Van Orden, who at the time were running online businesses from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jason was behind the Podcasting Underground and co-hosted Internet Business Mastery — two resources that significantly influenced my own path into podcasting. The idea that you could build a business that let you live wherever you wanted was powerful and motivating.
The Reality Behind the Dream
After nearly two decades in internet marketing, I can tell you that the internet lifestyle is real — but it looks different from the fantasy.
It Is Not Passive
Let me be honest about this. There is no such thing as a truly passive online business. Every successful internet business I have seen requires consistent effort. Content needs to be created. Emails need to be written. Products need to be maintained. Customer questions need to be answered. The “passive income” part comes from systems and leverage, not from doing nothing.
Location Independence Is Real
That said, the location independence part is absolutely achievable. I have recorded podcast episodes from hotel rooms, coffee shops, and my home office. I know entrepreneurs who run their businesses from Bali, Portugal, Mexico, and a dozen other countries. The tools available in 2026 — cloud-based everything, Zoom, Slack, global payment processing — make it genuinely possible to run a business from anywhere with decent internet.
It Takes Longer Than You Think
Most people who achieve the internet lifestyle did not get there in six months. It took me years of building my blog, launching my podcast, growing my audience, and developing products before I had the kind of business flexibility that people dream about. The overnight success stories you see online almost always have years of hard work behind them.
Building Toward Location Independence in 2026
If the internet lifestyle appeals to you, here is what I would recommend based on my experience.
- Start with a skill-based business. Freelancing, consulting, or coaching gives you immediate income and location flexibility while you build longer-term assets like content and products.
- Build an audience. A blog, a podcast, a YouTube channel, or a newsletter gives you a platform that generates opportunities. This is the long game, but it is the most sustainable path.
- Create digital products. Courses, ebooks, templates, and software can be sold while you sleep — but they require significant upfront effort to create and ongoing effort to market.
- Keep your expenses low. The easiest way to achieve financial freedom is to need less money. Many digital nomads live very well in countries where the cost of living is a fraction of what it is in major US cities.
- Do not quit your day job too early. Build your online income to at least match your living expenses before making the leap. Having a financial cushion makes the transition much less stressful.
The Lifestyle Is the Bonus, Not the Goal
Here is the thing I have learned: the entrepreneurs who are happiest are not the ones who optimized for lifestyle first. They are the ones who built something they cared about, served an audience they enjoyed working with, and let the lifestyle benefits follow naturally. Build a business you are proud of, and the freedom will come.

Hey Mark,
Thanks so much for the mention of Jet Set Now on your blog! Yeah, I hope my stuff is half as good as Jason’s. I’ll be pretty proud it if is. Are you considering a jet set lifestyle?
@Melanie,
You are quite welcome.
Regarding the jet set lifestyle — right now the answer is “no.” I have a great day job, kids in school and extended family in the immediate area. So right now, Internet Marketing is a fun hobby for me and I don’t have any lifestyle goals related to travel.
Having said that, I do see value in being able to pick up and go even if a person doesn’t actually do it. And certainly, if something unexpected were to happen with my day job, that might really change my outlook.
Good luck with jestsetnow.com, and let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.
Success,
Mark
I’m definitely checking this blog out.
I started blogging for a similar reason. I wanted to be free of a physical workplace and be completely mobile.
Definitely recommend all three of the Van Orden Family blogs.
They are building a media empire. Strongly recommend you check out the Internet Business Mastery Podcast. IBM is the top-ranked IM podcast on i-Tunes. I suspect it will hold that position until the MasonWorld Internet Marketing Podcast launches later this year. 🙂
