Are you interested in making money online but you do not know where to start? There are hundreds of strategies, thousands of courses, and millions of opinions about the best approach. After years of building online businesses, here is my honest advice: start a blog about something you genuinely care about, create valuable content, and help people. Everything else follows from there.
The Simple Formula That Works
The most reliable way to make money online has not changed in nearly two decades. Find a topic you are knowledgeable and passionate about. Create a website where you publish helpful, high-quality content on that topic. Build an audience of people who trust you because you consistently help them solve their problems. Recommend products and services that you believe in. Some of those people will buy, and you earn a commission or sell your own product.
That is the entire formula. It is not complicated. It is not glamorous. And it takes real work over real time. But it works.
Why Trust Is Everything
The reason this approach works when so many others fail is trust. When you consistently publish helpful content without asking for anything in return, people learn to trust your recommendations. When you finally do suggest a product or service, your audience listens because you have earned the right to be heard.
Compare this to the marketer who promotes anything with a high commission, regardless of quality. Their audience learns quickly that the recommendations cannot be trusted. Word gets out, traffic drops, and the business dies. The free market is ruthless with people who abuse trust.
Getting Started in 2026
The tools for starting an online business are better and more affordable than ever. Here is the simplest path to getting started:
- Pick a topic you know well and care about. It could be anything from home brewing to personal finance to dog training. The key is that you have genuine knowledge and interest.
- Start a blog or content site. WordPress, Ghost, or even a simple Carrd landing page to start. You do not need a perfect website on day one.
- Publish one helpful piece of content per week. Answer the questions your target audience is actually asking. Use tools like Google's People Also Ask or AnswerThePublic to find those questions.
- Build an email list from day one. Add an opt-in form to your site and offer something valuable in exchange for an email address.
- Monetize with affiliate marketing and your own products. Join affiliate programs for products you already use and trust. As your audience grows, create your own digital products that solve specific problems.
The Bottom Line
Making money online is not a mystery. It requires creating genuine value for real people on a consistent basis. Start with a topic you care about, help people, build trust, and the revenue will follow. The only thing stopping most people is the willingness to start and the patience to keep going.

I just wanted to note that CSSRetard.com is available if you wanted it. 😉
Nice, I see he is utilizing the new PepperjamNetwork Store. While it doesn’t look all to great with the way he has it styled I can really see some potential with it.
And I completely agree with you on doing something that you are passionate about. I was lost on my blog about 1.5 months ago and didn’t know what to do with it. Beings I know quite a bit about web design I figured I would just write about that and it has been a lot easier to blog. I can provide quality content that is easy for my readers to understand.
Yep — I think that Garry actually got him turned on to that niche.
I love your blog. I am a programmer but a CSS retard. I read every post.

Thanks a million…. I do find it hard to keep focused on one thing but do try and put passion into my work…
Hey Jarret, I agree about the Pepperjam styling, right now I just threw it in, as am not sure if I want it to be there or not yet. The site still has some tweaks and changes to be done.
I agree you need to be passionate — more so for a blog as it requires content, content and more content.
As for monetizing, Google Adsense is probably one of the strongest.
There are some sites online where users can make money with Google Adsense without a website (so totally 100% free). Here are some sites that do revenue share with adsense: Google Adsense Revenue Share List . There are others out there, but these are approved.
Just thought I would share since its nice to have zero overhead in this down economy. My wife is calling. Have a nice day.
One tip to Your buddy. He should not overuse the use of WordPress Tags. Every tag pointing to a new page. For SEO purpose, as I have noticed, is to have between 3 – 6 tags, really targeted to the posts content. That will help strengthen the tag-pages in SE
