Updated 2026:<\/strong> This was the very first episode of what became the Late Night Internet Marketing podcast. I recorded it in July 2009 with a simple mission: help people who work full-time jobs build internet businesses on the side, one night at a time. Looking back after more than sixteen years and hundreds of episodes, the core mission has not changed.<\/p>\n

Why I Started the Podcast<\/h2>\n

When I first got interested in internet business, I did what most people do. I loaded up my iPod with podcasts and listened during my commute. I found some great shows, especially Internet Business Mastery with Jay and Sterling, which really opened my eyes to the concept of lifestyle design through internet business. That podcast inspired me to eventually create my own.<\/p>\n

But I noticed a gap. The existing podcasts were either too advanced, covering strategies for people already making serious money, or too broad, talking about marketing trends that did not help someone just getting started. There was nothing specifically designed for the person with a full-time job, a few hours a week, and a desire to build something online from scratch.<\/p>\n

That gap is what Late Night Internet Marketing was built to fill. The name says it all. I was literally building my internet business late at night, after my day job and family responsibilities were handled. I figured there were thousands of people doing the same thing, and they needed practical, no-hype guidance.<\/p>\n

Three Things New Internet Marketers Need to Know<\/h2>\n

In that first episode, I shared what I considered the three most important things for someone just starting out. These principles have held up remarkably well:<\/p>\n

  • Pick one thing and focus.<\/strong> The biggest mistake new internet marketers make is trying to do everything at once. Choose one business model, whether that is affiliate marketing, content creation, digital products, or something else, and commit to learning it before moving on. Shiny object syndrome has killed more internet businesses than competition ever has.<\/li>\n
  • Invest in education carefully.<\/strong> There are excellent courses and mentors out there, and there is also a mountain of overpriced garbage. Before buying anything, ask yourself whether the person selling it has actually done what they are teaching. Look for proof, not promises.<\/li>\n
  • Be patient and consistent.<\/strong> Building an internet business takes time, especially when you are doing it part-time. The people who succeed are not necessarily the smartest or the most talented. They are the ones who kept showing up, kept creating content, and kept learning from their mistakes week after week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What the Podcast Became<\/h2>\n

    What started as a simple show for beginners evolved over the years into a resource covering everything from affiliate marketing and SEO to email marketing, content strategy, and the mindset challenges of building a business on the side. The audience grew because the message stayed honest: no hype, no empty promises, just practical advice from someone doing the work alongside you.<\/p>\n

    If you are just discovering this podcast, welcome. The fundamentals have not changed. Find a problem people need solved, create valuable content, build an audience, and monetize that audience ethically. The tools and tactics evolve, but that formula works as well in 2026 as it did in 2009.<\/p>\n
